Challenge Accepted

Men's Fitness Deputy Editor Zack Zeigler wanted to switch up his fitness routine, so this is the challenge he accepted: run three Spartan Races in three countries in three months. Check out how he did.

Race 1: Spartan Super

Location: Lake Tahoe, California
Challenge: 8.5 miles, 21 obstacles
Date completed: October 1, 2017

Cold, Cranky, and Unprepared

Zack’s lack of preparation is immediately on display.

Bring on the Burpees

A spike in confidence ends abruptly.

The End Is Near

Mere steps from the finish line, what could possibly go wrong?

Race 2: Spartan Beast

Location: Sparta, Greece
Challenge: 16.5 miles, 30+ obstacles
Date completed: November 4, 2017

A rough start to the trip—and the race

Travel woes, a spooky hotel, and a mixed up start time leave Zack as the last competitor to start the race.

Missteps, miscommunication, and mud. Lots of mud.

Slips on the course, a camera crew that’s MIA, and a turn in the weather add to Zack’s frustrations.

Embracing the mud and making new friends along the way, Zack’s 18-mile journey is capped off by another 5-mile run the following day.

Race 3: Spartan Ultra

Location: Reykjavík, Iceland
Challenge: 30+ miles, 50+ obstacles
Date to be completed: December 16, 2017 (Coverage coming soon)
